Video: METALLICA Guitarist Talks About Band's Appearance At San Diego's COMIC-CON

July 19, 2013

In addition to making their first-ever visit this week to San Diego for the massive geek culture event known as Comic-Con, METALLICA also announced that it will play a surprise show while in town. As previously reported, the band is appearing today (Friday, July 19) at the San Diego Convention Center for a panel and preview of their upcoming IMAX 3D movie, "Metallica Through The Never", which arrives in theaters this fall.

The band has also revealed that it will play a gig somewhere in San Diego later tonight, posting at its web site, "We can't just TALK about the film when we are in San Diego . . . we want to play too! Following our chat in Hall H at Comic-Con, we'll be heading out to a super-secret spot to have some fun and hit the stage. Comic-Con attendees will have a chance to win tickets at the Hall H event and Met Club members should keep their eyes peeled here for more details about chances to win tickets too."

According to the New York Times, 500 free tickets for the concert were distributed at Comic-Con. A musical performance is a rarity at the convention, which draws more than 100,000 fans of movies, TV, gaming and comic books.

A short video clip of METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett talking about how important it is to him to be finally appearing at the San Diego Comic-Con after all these years can be seen below.

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio that making "Through The Never", a fusion of concert film and fictional narrative, was an eye-opening experience. "It's been pretty scary, but it's been something on our radar for a while," he said. "It's just a total free feeling with it. You know, when we first started talking about this, we came up against lots of people saying, 'No,' and 'It's never gonna work' and, you know, we think it does work and it's pretty unique. My initial thing was to hopefully break even with this and make it something that's historical and unique and become some kind of cult classic."

METALLICA's panel — which is premiering a new trailer and feature exclusive footage from the movie — is taking place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the 6,000-person capacity Hall H, the largest room in the convention center.

"Metallica Through The Never" will open on IMAX screens in the U.S. on September 27, with a wider release following on October 4.
